Matching strategy: how to beat the kitchen timer

Practical habits for faster matching, fewer sighs and more three-star levels in The Lid Drawer, from reading stamps to handling the doorbell.

Published

Early levels of The Lid Drawer forgive a lot. Later the drawers get fuller, the size stamps wear off and the timer gets tighter. These are the habits that matter most once a level starts to fight back.

Know how the clock really works

The timer is not just a countdown. It moves both ways:

That last line is the important one. One wrong guess wipes out the time from almost three good seals, and it also breaks the streak that was about to pay out. On most levels, slowing down by half a second to check a piece is cheaper than guessing.

What three stars needs

Three stars asks for two things at once: finishing with at least 35 percent of the starting timer left, and no more than one sigh. Two stars needs at least 15 percent left and three sighs or fewer. Any finish inside the time earns at least one star.

A clean but slow run can miss the top grade, and so can a fast run with two careless drops. The result card shows your sighs, your time left, and exactly how much time a three-star finish needs on that level.

Scan before you drag

When a level opens, look at the whole floor before touching anything. Clear the easy pairs first: unusual shapes, bright colours, novelty tubs like the ice cream tub or the bento box. Each one makes the hard pieces easier to see.

Leave the near-misses for last. The game loves to put two lids of the same shape, brand and colour in neighbouring sizes, and its level card warns you when it does ("Watch the stamps: 2C and 2.5C are both in here").

Check the four things in a fixed order

A lid fits only when shape, size, brand and colour all match. Pick an order and stick to it so you stop missing things. A good order is:

  1. Shape, because it is visible from across the drawer.
  2. Colour, because it is the next quickest to see.
  3. Brand, printed on the piece.
  4. Size, which takes the closest look.

Watch out for the classic look-alikes: square against rounded square, round against oval, and the plain rectangle against the clip box with its four clips.

Learn to size by eye

From level 16 the size stamps start to fade. From level 31 the numbers are gone and you count the notches on the rim instead: one notch per cup, with a half notch for the half sizes. From level 51 there are no stamps and no notches at all, so you hold the lid over the tub and judge it by eye. Breather levels show clearer stamps than the levels around them, which makes them a good place to calibrate your eye.

Strays: sort them early, not first

Strays add a little time and count toward your streak when sorted correctly. But a lid is only an orphan if its tub is not on the floor or still to come, and in a jammed drawer its partner may not have come loose yet. Match the clear pairs, then sort the strays once the floor thins out.

In pantry, fridge, freezer and garage levels the tubs are labelled in masking tape (RICE, SOUP, SCREWS and so on). Match the label as well as the size.

Grab the free time

Two kitchen events can swing a close level:

When the doorbell rings, drop everything else and go for the easiest pairs you can see. This is not the moment to sort strays.

Deal with Biscuit fast

Biscuit the cat wanders the drawer, sits on tubs and sometimes runs off with a lid. Tap Biscuit while it is carrying a lid to get the lid back and 3 seconds with it. Wait too long and Biscuit hides the lid, which costs you 5 seconds before it turns up again somewhere else. If Biscuit is sitting on a tub you need, tap the cat to shoo it away.

Use a Lid Finder instead of guessing

A Lid Finder lights up a matching pair and costs nothing on the clock, so late in a crowded level it beats a risky guess. The Mystery Bin and bonus rounds guide explains how to earn more.

Retry without worrying

You can retry any unlocked level, and only your best time is kept. A one-star level is worth replaying once you know its tricky pieces, since each level is built from its level number and brings back the same set of containers every time, even though they land in different spots.

Put a couple of these habits to work on your next level and see how much time you can save.
